Escher 01 is a piece made out of a single 4 second vocal sample recorded by Tahlia Makunde. The sample was stretched out and pitch shifted to create two Shepard Tones. What you hear is these two Shepard Tones played simultaneously recorded into the same room over and over again. The sounds intersect and change over time. The piece was inspired by the work and writing of Alvin Lucier particularly “I am Sitting in a Room”.

The piece was premiered in stereo at Macquarie Univeristy NSW in May 2016 and in quad at Ainsley Art Center’s Collected Resonance in October 2016. The piece has also been paired with a video of paintings by Mark Rothko.
